U.S. News & World Report has released this year's national rankings of undergraduate programs. Purdue ranks #8 among engineering programs at doctoral-granting universities, tied with Carnegie-Mellon and Cornell.

Professor Chappell is among 86 engineers chosen for the Symposium, which brings together the nation's outstanding young engineers (ages 30-45) from industry, academia, and government to discuss pioneering research in various engineering fields. Professor Andrew Weiner is serving as symposium chair.

A new technology enabling tiny machines called micro electromechanical systems to "self-calibrate" could make possible super-accurate and precise sensors for crime-scene forensics, environmental testing and medical diagnostics.

The award is given to 12 students across the world and consists of a $5000 cash prize. Supradeepa works with Professor Andrew Weiner in the area of ultrafast photonics.

Researchers, led by Professor Vladimir Shalaev, have overcome a fundamental obstacle in using new "metamaterials" for radical advances in optical technologies, including ultra-powerful microscopes and computers and a possible invisibility cloak.

Professor C.S. George Lee will lead a Purdue team that will be receiving a human-size humanoid robot called HUBO and will focus research on vision-based mobility and human-humanoid interaction.

Their paper "Real-Time Model Predictive Control of the Cuk Converter" was presented at the 2010 IEEE Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics.

On June 25th the Purdue ROV team competed at the University of Hawaii in Hilo and placed 4th overall internationally. This put Purdue ahead of such universities as MIT, Georgia Tech, UNC, and Arizona State.

Professor Evgenii Narimanov realized that it should be possible to design a metamaterial with the right internal structure to absorb virtually all the electromagnetic radiation in a particular range. An object made of such a material would effectively be perfectly black. By contrast, ordinary black objects always reflect a little light.

Graduate student Eric Naglich was awarded 2nd place in the student paper competition at the largest conference in the area of microwave and RF systems.
