Two professors from Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, have been named to the 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list. The honor places Alexandra Boltasseva and Vladimir M. Shalaev among an elite group of scientists and engineers whose work ranks in the top 1% of citations in the Web of Science over the past decade.

Boltasseva and Shalaev are celebrated for their groundbreaking research in nanophotonics and quantum photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials. Their work is advancing technologies in telecommunications, imaging, sensing and quantum computing.

Boltasseva, the Ron and Dotty Garvin Tonjes Distinguished Professor of ECE, is an HCR for the fourth time, having previously been on the list in 2020, 2021, and 2022. She is known for her leadership in developing new low-loss optical materials. Boltasseva’s innovations have inspired low-power nanometer-scale optical and optoelectronic components, such as tiny optical modulators and photodetectors, as well as nanoscale power-efficient light sources that have the potential to transform the fields of opto- and nanoelectronics, on-chip optical communication and data recording storage and transmission.

Shalaev, the Bob and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor of ECE, has been an HCR multiple times. He has been on the list every year since its inception in 2017. Shalaev is recognized for his impact in the field of physics. Shalaev specializes in quantum photonics, plasmonics, and optical metamaterials. He is a pioneer in nanophotonics and metamaterials, known for his foundational theories and experimental designs. Shalaev’s research includes the first demonstrations of negative refractive index materials at optical frequencies, a breakthrough that has inspired advances in photonics and quantum technologies.

The HCR list recognizes researchers whose publications are not only frequently cited by peers but also reflect community-wide recognition for their contributions. Selection criteria combine citation activity with qualitative analysis and expert judgment to ensure representation of truly influential researchers.

According to Clarivate, only one in 1,000 scientists and social scientists worldwide are named to the list. This achievement underscores Purdue’s leadership in addressing critical challenges through research and innovation.
