Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic disease that affects about 1 in 15,000 people in the US. PKU is characterized by an inability to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. The classic treatment for PKU is a medical diet that involves carefully controlling one's phenylalanine intake. Prof. Boutin and her graduate student Jieun Kim have created a database of phenylalanine content and phenylalanine to protein ratios in common foods to help individuals with PKU manage their diet.
