Why did you choose Purdue for your MSECE?
Working in a very dynamic environment, it would be difficult to leave work in the middle of the day to attend class. Additionally, I was newly married when I began the program and didn’t want to be gone all day at work and all night at school. Thus, I wanted to attend an online only program so that I could complete the coursework in my own time. I can do homework over lunch or before or after work, meet up with friends, and still complete all my assignments on time.

Another very important factor for me was course availability. I came across several other online master’s programs that claimed to offer a specialization in microelectronics, but when I looked at the online course offerings, there was only a handful of classes focusing in that area. In contrast, Purdue offers a breadth of online courses so students can truly specialize in their focus areas.
What do you like about the program?
The program is well organized - expectations are clear, class listings are available well in advance, and additional materials like past syllabi have a central location for easy access. If I do need any clarification, the program staff has always been quick to respond with helpful answers. Furthermore, my interactions with professors have also been positive. Most of them are very understanding of the fact that many online students are balancing work and school, and I’ve had several that scheduled office hours specifically around that fact.
How will earning the MSECE help you reach your career goals?
Earning the MSECE degree will help me increase my expertise, and I have a strong interest in the field. As an early career professional, I think the degree will help me stay competitive over time.
What advice would you give to a prospective student interested in the online MSECE?
Take advantage of the 1 credit hour classes! This lets you finish your degree faster while not taking 6 credit hours every semester.
Being in an online program does not mean that you are on your own. Get to know your professors and classmates, especially if you find the material challenging.
