For eight weeks this summer, five high school students traded textbooks for lab benches as they joined Purdue University's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering for the 2026 High School Summer Research Internship. Launched in 2023, the experiential learning program introduces students to the growing field of biomedical engineering while providing hands-on research experience and a glimpse into how the discipline is shaping the future of patient care.

The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is proud to recognize seven staff members who have received Purdue University's Bravo+ Award, which honors employees whose outstanding accomplishments advance the university through innovation, operational excellence, fiscal stewardship and service.

“I love helping students understand their superpowers,” says Miller, associate professor of engineering practice in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and assistant vice provost in Indianapolis. “I think each student has a super strength — and sometimes they don’t know what it is. I get to discover what that is in my conversations and work with students. Figuring out what aspects of themselves they can lean on makes them better people.”

Research co-authored by Juan Wachs, James H. and Barbara H. Greene Professor of Industrial Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, has been recognized by one of the world's leading surgical journals for its potential to improve burn care.

For biomedical engineering student Ava Flynn, resilience has been shaped by both profound loss and personal triumph. After losing her mother to a rare cancer and later facing her own battle with Stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma, Flynn transformed those experiences into a passion for engineering, medicine and serving others.

Her perseverance, compassion and commitment to improving lives recently earned her the 2025 Tyler Trent Courage and Resilience Award, recognizing Purdue students who exemplify the strength of character and determination that defined Tyler Trent's legacy.

Researchers in the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering have developed a soft, wearable pressure sensor that could significantly improve comfort and quality of life for people with limb amputations. Led by Professor Chi Hwan Lee and graduate student Tianhao Yu, the team created a flexible textile-based sensor capable of accurately measuring the high pressures experienced inside prosthetic sockets—without adding discomfort for the wearer. Published in ACS Nano, the research demonstrates a promising new approach to helping clinicians better fit prosthetic devices while reducing pain and preventing long-term injuries.
