Can you trust what you see?

A video on social media shows a high-ranking U.S. legislator declaring his support for an overwhelming tax increase. You react accordingly because the video looks like him and sounds like him, so certainly it has to be him. Not necessarily. The term “fake news” continues to take a much more literal turn as new technology is making it easier to manipulate the faces and audio in videos.

Pancreatic cancer 'time machine' exposes plot twist in cell growth and invasion

Pancreatic cancer has one of the worst survival rates among cancers. Patients can expect as low as a 9% chance to live for at least five years after being diagnosed. Going back in time to observe how cells with key gene mutations interact and become invasive would help researchers better understand how the cancer starts and identify it sooner.

Purdue University hosts record-breaking Indiana CTSI Retreat

Nearly 400 researchers and clinicians converged at Purdue University’s newly expanded Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering for the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) Retreat on Jan. 31. It was the largest such retreat ever hosted on the West Lafayette campus.

New technology for pathogen detection driven by lasers

Researchers at Purdue University have been working to develop new technologies to help stop the spread of foodborne illnesses, which kill 3,000 people a year, by detecting them more efficiently. They have developed a lanthanide-based assay coupled with a laser that can be used to detect toxins and pathogenic E. coli in food samples, water and a variety of industrial materials.

Staff members recognized for service anniversaries

Two staff members from the Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering were honored at the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity Recognition Luncheon. Cindy Holderbaum, academic programs administrative assistant, was honored for 15 years of service to Purdue. Tammy Siemers, senior graduate training program and professional development specialist, was honored for 10 years of service.
