Abigail Frank

Hometown: Portland, OR
Major: Propulsion

Why did you choose Aeronautics and Astronautics?
I have always been fascinated by space, but I am particularly interested in the human factors side of space. Long-term space travel will be complicated technically, but integrating people together in a small habitat will have implications for psychological and physical health that we don't yet understand. I hope to contribute to engineering designs that are sustainable for both the environment and the people using them.

Best event or organization you’ve participated in within AAE?
Purdue Space Program! I am on the High Altitude team, and it has brought me some of my closest friends and some amazing hands-on learning to complement my classes.

Best event or organization you’ve participated in outside of AAE?
The Honors Mentors Program through the Honors College. I enjoy this because I can connect with and mentor students from a variety of majors and engage with interdisciplinary topics.

Why did you want to be an AAE Ambassador?
One of the main reasons I came to Purdue was because of an experience I had with an AAE Ambassador. She represented everything that Purdue stands for. She is hard-working, persistent, compassionate, and invested in passing down what she knows to new people. I wanted to become an Ambassador to give prospective students a similar window into why Purdue is such a wonderful community and an incredible place to learn.

Favorite place on campus?
The Jedi Room

Favorite class you’ve taken thus far and why?
AAE 251 - Introduction to Aerospace Design

What is one piece of advice you would give to a potential AAE student?
Don't be afraid to be wrong. You will be wrong a lot, but that's the best sign that you're learning and growing as an engineer.

Who is someone you look up to in the Aero/Astro industry and why?
I look up to Kellie Gerardi because she has done significant research into women's health in space, laying the groundwork for the next generation of women to travel to the Moon and Mars.

What motivates you to succeed?
I am motivated by my young self who dreamed of working for NASA and helping other people fly to space safely and study other planets.

What is your ultimate career goal?
I would like to be a Flight Director for NASA's crewed spaceflight endeavors.

What do you like to do when you’re not studying/in the lab or classroom?

I love hiking, rock climbing, and camping (basically anything outdoors!). I have recently also taken up crocheting and scrapbooking. I'm a big Purdue sports fan, so you can find me at any football or basketball game!!
