Catalog Description:

Solution to the filtering approximation problem via Butterworth, Chebyshev, elliptic, et., approaches. Transfer function scaling and type transformations. Effects of A/D and D/A conversion. Digital filter design methods. Active filter design using operational amplifiers. Operation and design of switched capacitor filters. A laboratory for the construction of digital filters is provided.

11 Approximation problem, Butterworth, Chebyshev, inverse Chebyshev, Bessel, Elliptic. Frequency scaling and type transformation.
4 Effects of A/D and D/A conversion, both mathematically and on the human ear. Aliasing. D/Z rolloff. Two's complement in fixed point digital filters.
2 Review of Z-Transform, difference equation solution, inverse transformation.
4 Steady-state frequency response of digital filters. Standard Z-transform design method. Cascade and parallel architecture of higher order filters.
2 Bilinear Z-transform design method. Comparison of designs done with standard z and bilinear methods.
6 Nonrecursive digital filter design with Fourier series. Window functions. Hardware implementation. Discussion of examples.
1 Review of properties of operational amplifiers and basic op. amp. building blocks.
4 Using first-and second-order active building blocks to achieve higher-order filters. Coefficient-matching approach to first- and second-order design. Realistic element values depending on implementation technology chosen. Impedance scaling to achieve realizable element values. Two first-order building blocks. Sensitivity considerations.
4 Popular second-order section. Delyiannis bandpass. The Friend biquad. The three-amplifier biquad.
4 Operation and design of simple switched-capacitor filters.
Tests

Lab Outline:

The laboratory is run largely on an open-shop basis. Assignments are made in digital filtering; specifically in the area of operation sequencing in digital filters, low-pass and band-pass high order filters, nonrecursive magnitude equalizers.
