Indentation
Macroindentation hardness testing (e.g. Rockwell) utilizes an indenter tip of a specific geometry and a known load to measure the hardness based on the indentation depth. In metals, macroindentation hardness correlates with tensile strength and is an important nondestructive testing method.
Microindentation and nanoindentation use much smaller loads and allow for increasingly fine spatial resolution on a specimen.
