Nikhilesh Chawla, MSE Ransburg Professor, and PhD student Nicole Balog study how Australian stingless bees construct honeycombs using foundation discs that spiral upward like ramps. This natural design offers insights into efficient building methods. This collaboration with Prof. Brock Harpur, an associate professor of entomology at the Purdue Bee Lab, and Ros Gloag, a senior lecturer at the University of Sydney in Australia, is studying evolutionary solutions from nature to create revolutionary designs in buildings and materials.
