MSE Prof. Nik Chawla and Rahul Frankly, MSE PhD Student, unravel how bees achieve an engineering marvel: the honeycomb!

Rahul Franklin, PhD Student in MSE, and Dr. Nik Chawla, Ransburg Professor of Materials Engineering, are part of a team that has unravelled how bees construct their strong, but lightweight honeycomb structures! Using a non-destructive technique that relies on high-energy X-rays to create 3D images with micrometer-scale resolution, the team tracked the growth of the honeycomb. This research has important implications for new strategies for making robust, lightweight, structural materials.
