Congratulations to Dr. Bahr for being chosen as this year’s OMSE!

Dr. David F. Bahr, professor at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University (WSU), is the 2011 recipient of the Purdue University Outstanding Materials Science and Engineering (OMSE) Award for his contributions towards leadership, education, and research contributions in the areas of micromechanics of deformation, corrosion of bulk materials, and the design of microelectromechanical (MEMS) devices.

Making Materials Smarter: Breathalyzers for Disease Detection

The approach is capable of rapidly detecting biomarkers in the parts per billion to parts per million range, at least 100 times better than previous breath-analysis technologies according to Carlos Martinez, an assistant professor of materials engineering at Purdue who is working with researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Nickel Nanoparticles as Electrochemical Sensors

Professor Lia Stanciu and PhD student Yu-Ho Won, as well as colleagues from Clarkson University, have demonstrated in a new paper in the Journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics that nickel nanoparticles can be successfully used in the construction of electrochemical enzyme sensors for the detection of phenolic compounds.
