Purdue Ag-celerator invests $100,000 in two plant science startups

The Purdue Ag-celerator has invested a total of $100,000 in two plant science startups for the fall round of investments.

The recipients are VinSense, a company assisting in wine grape agriculture through Purdue-patented technology, and Karyosoft, a genomics data analytics company empowering biologists for rapid data mining through just a few clicks proprietary platform to accelerate innovations.

Facebook donates its Surround 360 to ECE's VIPER Lab

A camera donated to Edward Delp, the Charles William Harrison Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, by Facebook will allow students in his Video and Image Processing (VIPER) Lab to capture images in 360 degrees. The Facebook Surround 360 uses 17 cameras – 14 around the edges, one on top and two on the bottom. Delp says the main capability of the camera is its ability to produce unique, high-quality and high-resolution imagery that can be used in research.

Light powers world's fastest-spinning object

A dumbbell-shaped nanoparticle powered just by the force and torque of light has become the world's fastest-spinning object. Scientists at Purdue University created the object, which revolves at 300 billion revolutions per minute. Or, put another way, half a million times faster than a dentist's drill.

ECE Prof. Ebert to lead Purdue’s Integrative Data Science Initiative

Purdue University has announced new leadership for its Department of Computer Science, Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), and Integrated Data Science Initiative.

David Ebert, the Silicon Valley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will lead Purdue’s Integrative Data Science Initiative; Dongyan Xu, the Samuel D. Conte Professor of Computer Science, will lead CERIAS; and Sunil Prabhakar will return to his role of head, leading the Department of Computer Science.

ECE faculty and lecturers recognized as Outstanding Engineering Teachers

Thirty-two ECE faculty and lecturers are being recognized as Outstanding Engineering Teachers for summer and fall 2019. These individuals received teaching evaluation scores of 4.7 or higher in undergraduate or graduate classes with enrollments of 10 and above and at least a 50% response rate.
