Jonathan Schwarz, who is receiving his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, has been chosen as an outstanding graduate to be the May 2010 Commencement Speaker. Video of his speech is posted within this spotlight.

The 2010 George Saridis Leadership Award in Robotics and Automation recognizes outstanding contributions of an individual for his/her exceptional leadership, innovation, and dedication that benefit the Robotics and Automation community.

Ragu Balakrishnan, currently interim head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named head of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective May 1.

Professor Appenzeller was awarded a 2009 IBM Faculty Award for $30,000, which foster collaboration between researchers and those in IBM research, development, and services.

Andrew Duly, advised by Professors David Love and James Krogmeier, has been assigned to the Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) in Dayton, Ohio working on multiple antenna radar systems.

The award is granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.

Recipients of this honor are either tenured associate professors or full professors who have been in that rank for no more than five years and are named in recognition of their scholarship. The newly named Faculty Scholars will begin their five-year terms in the fall of 2010.

Two ECE faculty were promoted to Professor and two were promoted to Associate Professor. The promotions are effective with the 2010-2011 academic year.

Professor Vladimir Shalaev has won the 2010 Max Born Award of the Optical Society of America, in recognition of his seminal contributions to both the theoretical framework and the optical realization of optical metamaterials.
