Computers power everything from artificial intelligence to climate modeling, but a new study from Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering shows that this progress may come with an overlooked environmental cost: biodiversity loss.

Irith Pomeranz, the Cadence Professor in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been honored with the prestigious IEEE TTTC Lifetime Contribution Medal in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to test technology.

The research team won the Best Paper Award for its groundbreaking research on “Quanta Diffusion,” a new AI-powered method for producing clear images and video in extreme low-light and high-motion conditions.

The project, called CROSS (Community around Securing the Research Software Supply Chain), will bring together researchers, research software engineers and government stakeholders to identify risks to RSSC security and propose ways to strengthen them.

Purdue University alumnus Yuri Kubo, who holds both a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (2008) and a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering (2015), has been named to NASA’s 2025 class of astronaut candidates.
