More than a million Americans suffer from heart attacks every year. Although recent advancements in medicine have improved patient prognosis, heart failure remains a deadly complication of heart attacks. But, what if mechanical maps of the damaged heart could help physicians predict the likelihood of heart failure and tailor interventions accordingly?

Two Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering staff members were honored at the 18th Annual College of Engineering Staff Awards of Excellence ceremony on Friday (Dec. 6). Asem Aboelzahab, Lead Instructional Labs and Senior Design Projects Coordinator, won the Professional Achievement Award, and Chantalle Brown, Academic Advisor, won the New Employee Award. Mung Chiang, John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering, presented the awards at Shively Club at Ross Ade Stadium. More than 200 guests, including the honorees, their families, friends and colleagues, attended the ceremony.

Jacqueline Linnes, Marta E. Gross Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, was honored at a reception Thursday (Dec. 5) as the winner of the 2019 Violet Haas Memorial Fellowship.

Two early career faculty members at the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering were among the 11 faculty members at Purdue who received up to $75,000 each in Showalter Trust Funding to support their research.

A growing number of people with Parkinson’s disease are finding the ability to communicate with a wearable device developed by a Purdue University speech-language researcher and entrepreneur. A team of engineers at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue conducted early product development work on the device.

Vitaliy Rayz, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, has been awarded the Willis A. Tacker Prize for Outstanding Teaching in Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University.

Although Chi Hwan Lee works with flexible electronics technologies at the cellular and tissue scales, the collaborations he marshals to help advance and translate his innovative technologies operate on an international scale. The assistant professor of biomedical and mechanical engineering at Purdue University is a master collaborator. His partnerships span the globe, from South Korea, across the US, to the faculty member next door. He finds partners in industry, clinics, academia, the governments of two countries, and, serendipitously, while standing in line at Starbucks.

Neal Fearnot, president of MED Institute Incorporated and Cook Advanced Technologies, and Vice President of Cook Group Incorporated, delivered his best advice for graduate students in a special presentation of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Summer Seminar Series.

Leslie Bottorff has been named a Purdue 2019 Old Master. The Old Masters program brings Purdue alumni back to campus each fall to celebrate their professional successes and inspire current students. While on campus this November, Bottorff participated in classroom talks, met with several student organizations, including a group of Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering graduate students, and a community-wide panel discussion.
