Purdue researchers are applying the same basic technique seismologists use to measure earthquakes for a new medical technology that promises to prevent stress fractures by detecting the formation of tiny cracks in bones.

The Purdue University Board of Trustees, meeting at Purdue Calumet on Friday, September 29, approved the appointment of Kinam Park as Purdue's Showalter Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering. The appointment was made based on Park's academic achievements, which have been internationally recognized, and his unique contributions to the university through his scholarship, research, teaching and leadership functions.

Edward Delp, who holds a joint appointment with the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected by the Academy of Finland to the Distinguished Professor Programme.

Recent work by Professors Rashid Bashir and Michael Ladisch, and Demir Akin of Weldon BME with fellow researchers Amit K. Gupta (Harvard University), Pradeep R. Nair (Purdue ECE), Steven Broyles (Purdue Biochemistry) and Muhammad A. Alam (Purdue ECE) has appeared in the online proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Colleagues and former students gathered at Purdue University on Friday (Sept. 22) to share stories and testimonials about biomedical engineer Leslie Geddes, whose research has spawned innovations ranging from burn treatments to miniature defibrillators, ligament repair to tiny blood pressure monitors for premature infants.

Purdue University on Friday (Sept. 22) dedicated its $25 million biomedical engineering building - the first of its kind in Indiana. The building is a joint investment between the state of Indiana and private donors and will be home to the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

Friday September 22 is upon us.
