The Elevate Purdue Foundry Fund has awarded Neuro Vigor a $20,000 "Black Award" to accelerate commercialization of its drug therapy for pain in multiple sclerosis. Neuro Vigor's co-founder and chief scientist is Riyi Shi, professor of biomedical engineering and neurosciences. Shi has discovered a drug that can reduce a powerful neuro-toxin in the body, which has significant promise as a novel therapy for neuro-degenerative disease and injury.

Three Purdue University professors will be inducted in April as fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. The organization will recognize Pedro Irazoqui, a professor of biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering, associate head of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and director of the Center for Implantable Devices; Zheng Ouyang, a professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and chemistry; and Ann Rundell, a professor of biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering.

Research by a Purdue professor was chosen as one of 2015's top technical advances by The Scientist magazine. The research was performed by Ji-Xin Cheng, a professor in Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Chemistry and scientific director of the Label-free Imaging lab at Purdue's Discovery Park.

Pu Wang, a post doctoral researcher at the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, has been named a finalist in the 2016 InnovateHER Business Challenge by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Wang is co-founder of Vibronix Inc. with Ji-Xin Cheng, professor of biomedical engineering and chemistry. Wang was selected for his MarginPAT innovation; MarginPAT is an intraoperative assessment of breast tumor margin using a photo acoustic/ultrasound imaging system. The system provides a shorter procedure time, allowing a surgeon to clear cancer residue after removing a tumor from a breast cancer patient, which reduces the chance for a second surgery.

As the new movie "Concussion" comes to theaters, Purdue University researchers who have worked with forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu - played by actor Will Smith – can talk about the science that drives the film's storyline.

Three professors at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University have been named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. The organization recognized Charles A. Bouman, the Showalter Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering; Alyssa Panitch, vice provost for faculty affairs and the Leslie A. Geddes Professor of Biomedical Engineering; and Sherry L. Harbin, a professor of biomedical engineering and basic medical sciences.
