A Purdue-based startup is developing a disruptive nanotherapeutic platform that could induce conversion of bad fat to good fat in an effort to provide a safe and effective way to treat obesity and diabetes.

Faculty and graduate students from Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Veterinary Medicine will be at the West Lafayette Farmer's Market this summer to showcase how science and engineering are used by scientists, engineers, and clinicians at Purdue to advance science and medicine for human and animal health.

Stephen L. Ferguson, Chairman of the Board of Cook Group, received the Honorary Boilermaker Award and Carl A. Cook, CEO of Cook Group, received the Extraordinary Boilermaker Award at the French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick, IN on May 10. George R. Wodicka, Dane A. Miller Head of Biomedical Engineering, presented the awards on behalf of Purdue President Mitch Daniels during the Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering faculty and staff retreat.

Alumnus Aaron Kyle (PhD 2007) has received Columbia University's Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching. Kyle is a senior lecturer in Columbia's Department of Biomedical Engineering. A top honor presented to only five recipients each year, the presidential awards "recognize teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and, in particular, honor faculty who have had a lasting influence on the intellectual development of students."

Alumna Rachel Price Bell, (PhD, 2004), has been named a 2017 inductee of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame®. The CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame recognizes former Academic All-Americas who received a college degree at least 10 years ago, have achieved lifetime success in their professional careers, and are committed to philanthropic causes.

Jean A. Chmielewski, the Alice Watson Kramer Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and professor of biomedical engineering, has been chosen as the 2017 Herbert Newby McCoy Award recipient. One of Purdue University's top three research honors, the McCoy Award is the most prestigious award the university bestows in the natural sciences.

Jenna Rickus, professor of biomedical engineering and agricultural and biological engineering, has been named a 2017-18 Fellow of the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering program at Drexel University (ELATE at Drexel®).

Graduate students Ayeeshik Kole, Jenny Lin, and Evan Phillips have been awarded fellowships for 2017-2018 by Purdue's College of Engineering.

Four Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering students were awarded the prestigious Charles C. Chappelle Fellowship: Bahar Dhowan, Alexander Ocken, Melanie Venderley, and Kelsey Wasilczuk.

Weldon School senior Michael Drakopoulos has received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Program student Tran Nguyen (advisor: Hugh Lee) received an honorable mention.
