Shelley Claridge, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and chemistry at Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, has been named a 2016 DuPont Young Professor. The prestigious award recognizes promising research that advances basic science knowledge to address global challenges in food, energy and protection.

T.J. Puls, a PhD student in Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, is the recipient of a 2017 International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) Graduate Fellowship for Alternatives to the Use of Animals in Science.

Hyowon Lee, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, has received grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Samsung to support his work on next generation implantable medical devices. Lee's research focuses on implantable microdevices for neurological application.

Undergraduate students from Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering participated in a DesignGoodNow event designed to give students a platform to collaborate with students at universities around the world in real time to design assistive devices for people with disabilities.

Ji-Xin Cheng, professor of biomedical engineering and chemistry at Purdue, is spearheading a College of Engineering preeminent team effort to develop label-free imaging technologies that can quickly and accurately analyze unaltered living cells and tissues. The team will exploit major advancements in molecular spectroscopy — a workhorse analytical approach that identifies chemical substances by the way they scatter light.

Twenty innovative medical devices were demonstrated at the Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Senior Design Presentations on Dec. 15 at the Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering to a packed house of nearly 200 industry representatives, faculty, staff, students, family, and friends. A popular vote selected the top three projects. The winners of the 2016 Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Best Senior Design Project were Alex Baker, Chloe Beach, Anjali Malik, and Raj Patel for their project, "StrideSmart: Gait Monitoring and Improvement in the Geriatric Population."

Chien-Sheng Liao and Gurneet Sangha, both graduate students in Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, were awarded the Ronald W. Dollens Scholarship for 2016-17. The scholarship is a joint scholarship between the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Pharmacy and is awarded to outstanding graduate students in the research areas of drug delivery, tissue engineering or cardiovascular.

A team of Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering senior design students won first place at Purdue’s Spark Challenge on Friday, December 9. The team presented their project, dubbed “StrideSmart,” a smart assistive cane attachment for the geriatric population to help monitor patient walking patterns and potentially prevent falls for users. The device would notify users of irregular walking patterns in real-time through a companion smartphone application.
