The National Science Foundation has awarded a $300,000 grant to a team of Purdue University researchers to study the complex issues surrounding the lack of diversity and inclusivity in engineering.

The Fearnot-Laufman-Greatbatch Award is given each year to the BME or IBSc graduate student who gives the best BME summer seminar presentation, as determined by audience member evaluations.

A team of five biomedical engineering undergraduates who created and prototyped an economically feasible method for diagnosing tuberculosis in small children has won first prize in the 2016 Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge competition.

Taylor Moehling, a graduate student at Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, has returned from Haiti where she worked on developing new techniques for collection, culture and detection of Vibrio cholera (cholera) bacteria from local water sources. Moehling received the national Whitaker Foundation grant, which enabled her to conduct research abroad. She is advised by Jacqueline Linnes, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, who specializes in developing mobile, inexpensive diagnostic tools for detecting and monitoring infections diseases.

A new ultra-high resolution "nanoscope" is capable of taking 3-D images of an entire cell and its cellular constituents in unprecedented detail, an advance that could reveal biological phenomena never before seen and bring new medical insights.

A new tumor model has been shown to predict how certain types of cancer cells react differently to a commonly used chemotherapy drug, a potential tool for "precision medicine," in which drug treatment is tailored to individual patients and certain cancer types.

Eli Lilly and Company announced that John C. Lechleiter, chairman, president and chief executive officer, will retire as president and CEO and from the company effective December 31, 2016. Lilly's board of directors unanimously elected Dave Ricks, currently senior vice president and president, Lilly Bio-Medicines, to assume the role of president and chief executive officer. Ricks is a Purdue alumnus and a member of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering advisory board.

Alumnus Dave Ricks has received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. The award is a national recognition of an Eagle Scout who received the Eagle Scout rank 25 or more years ago, has gained status of eminence in his life’s work, and has shared his talents with the community on a voluntary basis.

Sarah Calve and Craig Goergen, both assistant professors of biomedical engineering, have been selected to receive research funding from the Ralph W. and Grace M. Showalter Trust Fund.
