Nambi Seshadri, Adjunct Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California at San Diego and Distinguished Institute Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras will present "Machine Learning for End-to-End COmmunication Systems Design" as part of the Purdue Engineering Frontiers Lecture on Wednesday, November 20, at 2:30 p.m. in MSEE 190.

Abstract: In the first part of the talk, I will present my first attempts at applying Machine learning for end-to-end communications systems design for a variety of communication channels including the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the multi-user interference channel, and the MIMO fading channel. In the second part, I will consider the problem of synthesis and generation of facial images, with the ultimate purpose being low bit rate image/video compression for transmission over noisy channels.

Bio:  Nambi Seshadri is currently an Adjunct Professor, affiliated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, USA, and a Distinguished Institute Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, India. He serves on the advisory board of several startups including Pleno, Inc., in San Diego, USA, and Shoelace Wireless, Irvine, CA.

From 1999-2016, he served as the CTO of the Mobile and Wireless division of Broadcom Corporation as well as General Manager (from 2011-2015) of the Mobile Business unit. From 1986-1995, he was with AT&T Laboratories, New Jersey as a Member and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, and from 1996-1999, he was Head of Communications Research at AT&T Labs, New Jersey.

Nambi Seshadri is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of IEEE and a recipient of the Alexander Graham Bell Medal from IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers).

The Purdue Engineering Frontiers Lecture Series is modeled after our distinguished lecture series, where we invite world-renowned faculty and professionals to Purdue Engineering to encourage thought-provoking conversations and ideas with faculty and students regarding the grand challenges and opportunities in their fields. While the distinguished lecture series is planned well in advance, the Frontiers Lecture Series is designed to take advantage of extraordinary opportunities like this one that can occur on relatively short notice.
