Mapping the brain with data science

Patients with dementia and other neural diseases show physical symptoms such as stumbling and confusion, but identifying the problem isn't as simple as taking an X-ray. A group of researchers at Purdue University are designing data-driven tools that will help clinicians better understand the progression of neurodegenerative diseases by identifying and tracking changes in the brain.

Graduate students excel at international conferences

Three PhD students advised by Zhongming Liu, assistant professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, and a recent Purdue graduate formerly advised by Liu, gained recognition at international conferences in France and Singapore this month.

Riggins wins Black Graduate Student Association Social Justice/Humanitarian Scholarship Award

Ti'Air Riggins, a PhD student in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, received the Purdue University Black Graduate Student Association Social Justice/Humanitarian Scholarship Award in May. The honoree of this award is a graduate or professional student who has demonstrated compassion, courage, and leadership in a volunteer role to promote tolerance at Purdue University.

Student startup wins Purdue Foundry Black Award

HaptImage, a Purdue University graduate-student owned startup that develops an assistive educational technology, was awarded a Purdue Foundry tier-one Black Award. Partners Shruthi Suresh, a PhD student in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, and Ting Zhang, a PhD student in industrial engineering, developed the technology to help individuals with visual impairments instantly experience images through real-time haptic feedback and tactile responses.

Goergen named Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor

Craig Goergen, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Purdue University, was awarded the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering 2018 Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor Award at the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Association Summer Kickoff in June.

Alumnus named CTO of Becton, Dickinson and Company

John A. DeFord, a 17-year member of the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Advisory Board and Purdue alumnus, has been appointed executive vice president and chief technology officer of Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), a leading global medical technology company, in June.
