Five Purdue BME Students Honored at Society for Biomaterials Annual Meeting

Five students from Purdue Biomedical Engineering received awards at the Biomaterials Annual
Meeting held in Tampa, FL, from April 24-27, 2002.
Elizabeth Massa (advisor: Professor Tom Webster) received first place for the Orthopedic Biomaterials
Special Interest Group Graduate Student Recognition Award.
Also receiving a first place award for Orthopedic Biomaterials Special Interest Group Undergraduate
Student Recognition was Sarina Kay, a 2001 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) student
of Professor Tom Webster's.
Second Place for Proteins and Cells at Interfaces Special Interest Group Graduate Student Recognition
Award went to Janice McKenzie, whose co-advisors are Professors Tom Webster and Riyi Shi.
Derick Miller received a Fifth Place for Proteins and Cells at Interfaces Special Interest Group Graduate
Student Recognition Award. His advisors are Professors Tom Webster and Karen Haberstroh.
The fifth Purdue BME student to win an award was Anil Thapa, who received a Fifth Place for Tissue
Engineering Special Interest Group Graduate Student Recognition Award. Anil recently completed his
Ph.D. research under the supervision of Professors Karen Haberstroh and Tom Webster.
