Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Materials Processing

The field of Materials Engineering examines Processing, Structure, and Properties of engineering materials (ceramics, metals, polymers, semiconductors, and composites). The products of materials research impact every branch of engineering. Research in Materials Engineering is intrinsically interdisciplinary, involving participants with a broad variety of backgrounds ranging from chemistry and physics to electrical and mechanical engineering. The goal of this program is to introduce science and engineering students to research opportunities in the field of Materials Engineering. This program welcomes students in Science and Engineering who have little or no background in Materials Engineering.

Program Description

Participants work for a summer at Purdue University, collaborating with faculty and staff on current Materials Processing research projects.

  • Tutorial sessions introduce students to basic concepts in Materials Engineering.
  • Priority given to students entering their junior or senior year.
  • Selection is based on applicant's academic standing, a brief statement of interest, and a faculty reference.
  • Nine-week program (June - August).
  • Award includes: $4,800 stipend and up to $400 for round-trip travel expenses.
