Diffusion Structures and Diffusion Paths in the Fe-Ni-Al System

Multiphase diffusion was investigated in the Fe-Ni-Al system at 1000oC with solid-solid diffusion couples assembled with b (B2), b (fcc) single phase alloys and (b + g ) two phase alloys for the development of diffusion structures and diffusion paths. The diffusion structures were examined metallographically and by scanning electron microscopy. Concentration profiles were determined by electron microprobe analysis and were employed for the direct determination of interdiffusion fluxes. Diffusion structures and diffusion paths were determined for a series of b/g diffusion couples assembled with a common b but different g alloys and discussed in terms of the various morphological features including planar and nonplanar interfaces and two-phase layers observed in the zone. Diffusion structures for multiphase couples assembled with two (b + g) terminal alloys were also examined to illustrate the phenomenon of demixing of phases and formation of adjacent b and g phase layers. Uncommon diffusion paths that deviated from the conventional S-shaped paths were also identified and discussed in the light of ternary diffusional interactions among the components and the miscibility gap between b (ordered) and b'(disordered) phases.
