EEE faculty honored at AEESP 2022
In addition to faculty and graduate students participating in a wide range of conference events, Purdue EEE faculty members Chad T. Jafvert and John W. Sutherland both received highly prestigious honors from AEESP.
Chad T. Jafvert, Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering and Professor of Environmental and Ecological Engineering, was elected as a Fellow of AEESP. This honor recognizes members who have exhibited exceptional long-term excellence in environmental research, teaching, or service to the environmental engineering and science community.
"I was very honored to be inducted as an AEESP Fellow this year at the AEESP conference at Washington University in St. Louis. After 2 years of not seeing friends and colleagues from other universities in person at conferences due to COVID, it was a wonderful experience to reconnect with so many," said Dr. Jafvert.
John W. Sutherland, Fehsenfeld Family Head of Environmental and Ecological Engineering received the Frederick George Pohland Medal. This award honors an individual who has made sustained and outstanding efforts to bridge environmental engineering research, education, and practice. Dr. Sutherland said, “I am profoundly honored to receive the Frederick George Pohland Medal. This award is especially meaningful because it is named for a Purdue alumnus and honors those who, like Professor Pohland, successfully integrated research, education, and practice. Previous Pohland Medal recipients have made enormous contributions to our field; I am blown away to see my name added to that list.”
AEESP is made up of professors in academic programs throughout the world who provide education in the sciences and technologies of environmental protection. This year’s conference theme, “Environmental Engineering at the Confluence,” was organized around four areas of convergence: convergence of education and research; convergence of research in air, water, and soil; convergence of research and action; and convergence of research, practice, and entrepreneurship.
