Doctor of Philosophy
There are no formal course requirements. A plan of study designed for the student's professional goals made in conjunction with an Advisory Committee will be submitted to the Graduate Committee for approval. Normally, this plan will include one or two related areas in engineering and/or the sciences to supplement the primary area of study. Admission to candidacy is based upon a preliminary examination which tests the student's understanding of basic concepts, ability to synthesize knowledge, and develop ideas through course work, self study, and aptitude for independent research. A scholarly thesis must be written and defended publicly before a final examination committee.
