27 weight percent of the structure of the F-22 is made from composites. Most of the composites are graphite fibers in epoxy. The graphite fibers strengthen the epoxy like glass does in fiberglass. But the graphite fibers can be as much as four times as strong as glass fibers. These composites are preferred over metals because they are about five times lighter than steel.
