Adobe Reader: Viewing PDF documents

Configuration

If you are using a web browser to view a PDF document, you must be using the global mime.types and mailcap files of either Mosaic or Netscape. If you have a personal .mime.types or .mailcap set for your browser, then you must copy the file pdfread into your HOME directory in order for Acrobat Reader to launch. To copy the file, from your HOME directory (cd ~) type:
	cp /usr/local/lib/mosaic/pdfread .

Copy this if you are using Mosaic or Netscape. AGAIN, this is if you are using personal configuration files.

To set your Netscape browser to use the global configuration files:

  1. Start Netscape.
  2. From the Options menu, choose Preferences.
  3. From Preferences, choose Helper Applications.
  4. Under MIME CONFIGURATION FILES, in the field Global Types File type:
    	/usr/local/lib/netscape/mime.types
  5. Under Global Mailcap File type:
    	/usr/local/lib/netscape/mailcap
[helper menu]

Ready to read a PDF file

Try the Mathematics Department's Past Qualifying Examinations. Once you are at the page, click on one of the examination links. This is a PDF document.

Note: You will see a few error messages as Acroread starts, just ignore them. The error messages will complain about a "DPS Client Library missing" and a "Debugging" error message. When staff time permits, ECN will look into this. Acroread should start in spite of these messages.
