Lingxi Li, professor in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Indianapolis, has been elected to a prestigious leadership role of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS), a global professional organization focused on advancing intelligent transportation technologies.

Li was elected by the society’s Board of Governors. He will serve as president-elect in 2027, president in 2028 and 2029, and past president in 2030.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society in this role,” Li said. “Transportation is evolving rapidly as advances in automation, connectivity, and artificial intelligence create new opportunities to build safer, smarter, and more efficient systems. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues around the world to strengthen our community, support the next generation of researchers and engineers, and translate these emerging technologies from research into meaningful real-world impact.”

At Purdue, Li is affiliated with Transportation and Autonomous Systems Institute, or TASI, which brings together faculty working across disciplines on transportation, autonomous systems and related technologies. He is also affiliated with the Institute for Control, Optimization and Networks (ICON), which connect leading experts to pursue innovative solutions to grand challenges in autonomous and connected systems.

Li’s research focuses on the control and optimization of complex systems and networks, with particular emphasis on connected and automated vehicles and intelligent transportation systems. His work also draws on systems theory, control theory, artificial intelligence and data analytics to address challenges in transportation and other complex engineering systems.

IEEE ITSS is a global professional community dedicated to advancing intelligent technologies that make transportation safer, connected, and more efficient. It brings together researchers, engineers, industry leaders, and policymakers to foster innovation, share knowledge, and develop cutting-edge solutions for the future of mobility.

Li has held leadership roles within the society, including vice president for financial activities and vice president for administrative activities.

His election comes as transportation systems increasingly incorporate automation, connectivity, and artificial intelligence, areas that closely align with his research at Purdue.
