Philip E. Paré, Rita Lane and Norma Fries Assistant Professor in Purdue University’s Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected to receive a Teaching Leadership Award in recognition of his commitment to advancing teaching excellence and leadership at Purdue.

The award supports Purdue instructors and departments that are fostering growth and innovation in teaching. Recipients are expected to champion a culture of instructional excellence by designing and implementing professional development activities within their departments. Awardees also collaborate with consultants from Purdue’s Center for Instructional Excellence and submit a final report outlining their project outcomes.

Paré’s winning proposal focuses on cultivating a stronger teaching culture in Purdue ECE through a series of monthly lunch meetings and trainings during the Fall 2025 semester. These sessions will engage faculty, staff, and graduate student teaching assistants from both the West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses.

Each session will center on one of the five pillars in Purdue’s Framework for Teaching Excellence — Exemplar, Enthusiast, Educator, Experimenter, and Explorer — using various formats such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers.

The planned events include:

  • An Exemplar workshop discussing inclusive teaching strategies, global learning tips, teaching awards, and academic publishing.
  • An Enthusiast panel featuring ECE faculty recognized for their outstanding teaching, including Charles B. Murphy Award recipients and Birck ECE Teaching Fellows.
  • An Educator session with a guest speaker from Purdue’s School of Engineering Education on evidence-based, learner-centered instruction.
  • An Experimenter workshop using Center for Instructional Excellence materials to explore innovation in teaching practices and classroom observations.
  • An Explorer panel discussing scholarship in teaching and learning, as well as mentorship and academic leadership.

“I'm excited to refine this plan in collaboration with the Center for Instructional Excellence,” said Paré. “This initiative is about creating meaningful connections and conversations around teaching—across roles, campuses, and experience levels—and further improving the experience of our students in their learning environments.”

The Teaching Leadership Award includes support for project logistics and discretionary summer funding to assist Paré in finalizing the initiative ahead of the 2025–2026 academic year.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students are encouraged to join the events during Fall 2025 to help strengthen the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the learning experiences of students.
