Abstract

Collaboration and information sharing are critical components of networked systems operating in dynamic environments to expedite learning and complete a common goal. In emerging collaborative systems, the limitation of resources such as data, power, and communication budgets is the primary bottleneck — a fundamental challenge that hinders the performance of these interconnected systems. Hence, the network's throughput is reliant on the effective communication and collaboration of the participating components.

In this talk, I will present my work in designing and analyzing principled methodologies for emerging learning and estimation tasks in resource-constrained, heterogeneous, collaborative networks, with a vision towards socially responsible use of such distributed systems. I will particularly discuss my contributions in developing efficient algorithms with mathematical guarantees for 1) communication-efficient collaborative learning in heterogeneous networks, 2) Information sharing and observation selection in collaborative sensing systems, and 3) leveraging latent parsimony in data-scarce scenarios for effective function approximation and inference. Finally, I will conclude this talk by discussing my future research on addressing the challenges of having resilient, secure, and effective collaborative learning systems that are socially responsible and beneficial.

Bio

Abolfazl Hashemi is a Postdoctoral fellow at the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research goal is to enhance the performance and capabilities of the networked systems characterized by limited resources and data scarcity. Abolfazl received his Ph.D. and M.S.E. degrees in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at UT Austin in 2020 and 2016. Before that, He received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology in 2014. He was the recipient of the Iranian national elite foundation fellowship and a best student paper award finalist at the 2018 American Control Conference.
