Order of the Engineer

Priority: No
College Calendar: Show

Order of the Engineer – a simple and meaningful opportunity for graduating engineering students to show professionalism and enhance their resume.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying a person as an engineer. The Ceremony includes taking an oath is similar to the oath attributed to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) that is generally taken by medical graduates and which sets forth an ethical code. The Obligation likewise, contains parts of the Canon of Ethics of major engineering societies. Initiates, as they accept it voluntarily, pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.

The Ceremony is conducted each semester by the Purdue Society of Professional Engineers.  To participate in the event, there is a one-time $20 fee which covers the cost of participating in a short, but meaningful ceremony, where you will be receiving a steel stainless ring to be worn on the small finger of your working hand, and a certificate. Every semester, engineers from practice come back and participate in this ceremony.

This semester's keynote speaker for Order of the Engineer is Ann Luther, P.E. Ann, an accomplished Professional Engineer and civil engineering graduate from Purdue University. She serves as the Central Indiana Program Chair for the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers. Throughout her career, she has worked on many facility projects with hospitals and clinics along with federal and state agencies. She was awarded Engineer of the year in 2015 and Outstanding Service Engineer in 2012, both by the Indiana and National Society of Professional Engineers.
