Foreign Language Placement Testing

Priority: No

The School of Languages and Cultures is offering placement testing for the Spring 2017 term this week on Wed.-Fri, 11/8-11/10 at 6 PM in Stanley Coulter Hall 231. We will be testing for French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish and Spanish for Heritage Speakers. For more information on placement testing in other languages and testing sessions, please visit our placement page:

https://www.cla.purdue.edu/slc/placement/index.html

Attached is a flyer that shows the information on testing for this week, as well as for the two nights of testing at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester. Please note that this week’s testing session will be the last opportunity for students to test at no cost. Beginning with the Spring 2018 semester, we will charge students a $35 rate for placement testing (non-Purdue students is $55). We will waive this fee for students who are Pell Grant eligible. Students will be billed by the Bursar’s Office after they sit for their placement exam.

Students who have had two years or more of high school study of a language will need to sit for a placement exam to determine where they will start in our sequence at Purdue. Students who have previous college credit in a language are not eligible to sit for a placement test in that language; their credit would determine their placement (has credit for SPAN 101; placed into SPAN 102). This includes students with AP language exam scores of a 3 or higher, or those with dual credits. Students who have had less than two years of high school study should contact the chair of that language to inquire about placement testing.

Students will learn the results of their placement at the conclusion of their exam, and we will load their score into their academic record. Provided that students’ registration window is open, they should be able to register for their placement course on the same evening of the exam. Results for placement testing are available to SLC faculty and all academic advisors through our SLC FLPT SharePoint site, and you can search the site for results by ten digit PUID (00000-00000) or by name in the search box at the top right:

Students can earn departmental credit for courses skipped in placement  by enrolling and successfully completing their placement course with a C- or higher on the West Lafayette Campus. Departmental Credit earned by successful completion of the placement course should be added by the Registrar’s Office by the start of the term following when grades post for the placement course.

If you have any questions about placement testing, departmental credit or rate-based testing, please contact Jason Baumer at jbaumer@purdue.edu.
