Boris Diner

I like the quality of teaching along with the breadth of the topics covered in each course.

Where do you work and what is your title?

I am a technical support engineer/system administrator and I also teach a seminar course on mathematical methods for image processing at a local university (which is my part-time job).

What is your area of interest within ECE?

Communications, Networking, Signal and Image Processing (CNSIP) and Fields and Optics (FO)

Why did you choose Purdue for your MSECE?

Clearly Purdue University is one of the top schools in ECE, so I had no doubt it was going to provide me with necessary tools to succeed in my career and to open new opportunities.

What do you like about the program?

I like the quality of teaching along with the breadth of the topics covered in each course. I find office hours with professors and TAs very beneficial as they share their experience with you and it also makes you feel more involved into the study process.

Platforms like Brightspace and Piazza are very convenient. You can easily watch lectures whenever you want and do it as many times as you need or discuss topics with your classmates.

It is quite easy to get a prompt and helpful response from the university staff. And there are many workshops, seminars, and lectures that you can join online which I find quite useful.

How will earning the MSECE help you reach your career goals?

I have already gained knowledge that I am actively using in my teaching and research activity and I keep on learning and soaking up new ideas and techniques every day. Currently, I am thinking about switching to a fully academic career and pursuing a Ph.D. at Purdue, so the MSECE gives me a solid foundation to achieve this goal. At the same time, the quality and the breadth of knowledge I get opens new paths for me in the industry as well.

What advice would you give to a prospective student interested in the online MSECE?

Improve your time-management skills. As I mentioned earlier, the scope of the courses is quite broad, so you should work hard and meet the deadlines. Also, monitor and participate in discussions on Piazza or Brightspace. I think it will improve your understanding of the material.

Any additional information you’d like to share:

I just want to thank the MSECE program manager and all professors and TAs I have already interacted with for their work and enthusiasm!
