A unique PhD program capitalizes on synergies and builds on a long-standing collaboration between the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bradley Duerstock, associate professor of engineering practice in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Industrial Engineering, and Juan Wachs, Purdue’s James A. and Sharon M. Tompkins Rising Star Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering, received $50,000 for the innovation of a portable device that helps people with visual impairments “see” digital images.

Hearing loss is so common in today's society, especially in older individuals, that many people question the use of doing anything to protect their hearing from noise and loud sounds. But it turns out the source of hearing loss may have a large impact on a person’s ability to understand speech and enjoy music.

Luis Solorio, an assistant professor at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, received the 2019 Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Engineering Graduate Students Award. The award was presented by the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Association at a celebration held at the school on July 1.

A team of Purdue University undergraduate students won a grand prize in the 2019 Co-making the Future China-US Young Maker Competition US semi-finals for a device that can be used to treat a type of vertigo. Five of the team members will travel to Beijing, China for an all-expenses paid trip to participate in the final rounds of the competition July 22-26.

Medical advancements can come at a physical cost. Often following diagnosis and treatment for cancer and other diseases, patients’ organs and cells can remain healed but damaged from the medical condition.

The United States is seeing an increase in the number of neurological diseases. Stroke is ranked as the fifth leading cause of death, with Alzheimer’s being ranked sixth. Another neurological disease – Parkinson’s – affects nearly 1 million people in the U.S. each year.

Dane Albaugh, an alumnus of the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and co-founder of Predictive Wear, was named a fellow of the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation (MDLF), a not-for-profit program aimed at recruiting and developing leaders who want to drive change in Indiana.

Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from the Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering won fellowships and awards for excellence in teaching, research, pitches and posters in the spring 2019 semester.

A few years ago, when Dianne Little was leading a horse around the corner of a barn, she was suddenly met by a piece of construction equipment with a tarp flapping heavily in the wind. The horse spooked, rearing up on its hind legs, and tried to head for the hills. Little held tight, refusing to lose control of the horse, but she left the barn that day with a partially dislocated shoulder and a torn rotator cuff.
