George Wodicka's thinking has been bigger than big, transforming a small research center into the renowned Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, whose work impacts millions of patients worldwide.

Engineering is No. 9 among schools with doctoral programs and has numerous specialty areas among the best. Industrial/manufacturing remains second, with aeronautical and astronautical fifth, mechanical sixth, civil seventh, electrical ninth and computer 10th.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued 169 utility patents on Purdue University inventions in 2021.

On August 11, 2022, Purdue University and Hanyang University in South Korea signed a letter of agreement to collaborate on a Dual MS Degree Program for both biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers from the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Purdue University won the Truth CT Reconstruction Grand Challenge, which was organized by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). The team’s win was announced at the 2022 AAPM Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, in July.

Elsje Pienaar, assistant professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, is developing computational models across multiple time and spatial scales, designing new methods of analysis and testing model predictions experimentally by using a mini-genome replica of the Ebola infection.

Bumsoo Han, a professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering (courtesy), has been developing engineered tumor-stroma models using genetic engineering, microfluidics and 3D-printing technologies.

The MOU to transform IUPUI includes the creation of a joint biosciences engineering institute to harness the power of the universities' collective academic and research strengths and ongoing collaboration between Purdue's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Indiana University's School of Medicine.
