Physician-Engineer Training Program

Medical Scientist Training Program MD-PhD BME

Welcome to the Indiana University Medical Scientist Training Program - a joint venture between the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. If you are interested in becoming a physician-engineer to innovate and translate next generation medical devices and therapies, we have a program that can help you realize that goal with a combination of strong mentorship, an incredible breadth of research opportunities, and a unique medical school curriculum.

Here at the Weldon School, we work collaboratively with the Indiana University School of Medicine to offer an MD-PhD BME, which represents the only engineering doctoral degree of the nine degrees offered through the MSTP program, and one of only a handful of such programs in the country.

The program leverages the combined strength and excellence of two nationally top-ranked schools with state-of-the-art facilities and resources, multidisciplinary centers, and institutes focused on global health and impact. It features a unique MD-PhD BME curriculum that is built on engineering excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, translation, and professional development.

The Weldon School fosters a highly collaborative environment, featuring significant cross-talk between engineering and clinical faculty. A diverse body of engineering and clinical faculty with broad expertise in four signature research areas provide individualized training and mentoring to students. Students, faculty, and staff enjoy a cohesive, supportive community. This collegial community combined with the individual mentoring fosters a high success rate of student internal and external fellowships.
