Abstract: A sequence of earthquakes on 6 February 2023 struck the south-southeastern part of Turkey, bordering Syria. Ground motions recorded near the source fault zone are among the most intense to struck urban built environment. Several cities, large and small, new and historic, were devastated. Just in Turkey, the disaster zone includes over 12 million people in 11 provinces. It is reported that more than fifty thousand lives were lost in Turkey and Syria in collapsed buildings. Observations made during a rapid reconnaissance, February 15-19, supported by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute will be shared. Reflections will be made on the current practice of earthquake engineering.
