Cardiac surgeons could use a patent-pending invention co-designed by Weldon School graduate students Elizabeth Mercer and Johnny Zhang to standardize a test that determines if a pacemaker's leads, or the thin insulated wires that extend from the pacemaker, are securely embedded in heart tissue.

A research team using tunable luminescent nanocrystals as tags to advance medical and security imaging have successfully applied them to high-speed scanning technology and detected multiple viruses within minutes.

Neuro Vigor LLC has signed an exclusive worldwide license with Purdue Research Foundation to develop and commercialize technology that promises an innovative approach to reducing the symptoms and pain of neurological disease and injury, including multiple sclerosis, neuropathic pain and Parkinson's disease. Neuro Vigor was co-founded in 2013 by Dr. Riyi Shi, an internationally recognized researcher and professor of biomedical engineering and neurosciences at Purdue.

During the Faculty Awards Convocation on Thursday (April 24), the Morrill Awards were given to three faculty members whose careers have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and in engagement missions. Professor Ed Delp, the Charles William Harrison Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering was one of the recipients.

Ji-Xin Cheng, a professor of biomedical engineering and professor of chemistry, has been selected as a 2014-2015 Discovery Park Faculty Research Fellow, and his project “High-speed, High-resolution Spectroscopic Imaging for Bioscience and Nanomaterial Characterization,” was chosen as a Discovery Park Fellows Project.

Rucha Joshi won the Graduate Division's "Most Entertaining Pitch Award," claiming $500 in Purdue's 8th Annual Elevator Pitch Competition organized by the Purdue Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program. The competition featured more than 40 participants making two-minute pitches at Discovery Park's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship. Joshi pitched Low-Calorie Pulp Biscuits, which use banana peels as a key ingredient for a low-calorie, low-fat, high-fiber cookie, making recycling of banana peels possible into a healthy product.

SpeechVive Inc. announced the completion of nearly $700,000 in funding to move a speech aid innovation for people with Parkinson's disease to the public. Jim Jones and Kirk Foster, both of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, developed the SpeechVive technology along with Jessica Huber, associate professor of speech, language and hearing sciences.

Researchers are working to enable smartphones and other mobile devices to understand and immediately identify objects in a camera's field of view, overlaying lines of text that describe items in the environment.
