Cognitive decline is a major and growing public health issue. BME’s Anne Sereno is researching how a working memory for a particular sensory input or object — like the shape of a car, or its location in a parking lot — is encoded and represented in the brain.

Approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population has some type of disability — comprising the largest minority in the nation, spanning all races and ethnicities, socioeconomic groups, and genders. Yet each of these individuals can contribute to society if given the right tools, training and opportunities. That’s where assistive technology, or AT, comes in, says Purdue IE’s Brad Duerstock.

Chi Hwan Lee, associate professor of biomedical engineering, was recently awarded the 2020 Editor's Award from the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (Speech section).

As a child, Chi Hwan Lee always had Lego sets on his birthday list. Lee, who loves math and physics, would spend hours building the sets – following the instructions as well as his imagination.

That imagination and those Lego pieces became the building blocks of Lee’s Purdue University research, which focuses on converting items like contact lenses and prosthetic hands into smart devices with specially designed electronic stickers to measure vision loss or simulate the sense of feeling.

Purdue Engineering Graduate Programs is hosting the Purdue Engineering Virtual Graduate Showcase, a premier graduate recruitment event, Oct. 3 and 4. Fully online, this event includes informational workshops, program-specific sessions, research highlights, virtual lab tours, a poster session with cash prizes, and more.

Purdue Engineering welcomed 35 new faculty members starting or hired this year, including two in Biomedical Engineering.

In the majority of cases, once Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering students finish their post-doctorate experience or complete their studies to earn their degree, their time in academia has completed as they move on to work in the business or industry sector.

A number of Engineering students are among the 85 student athletes named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars in 2020-2021.
