Purdue University in Indianapolis may be new but Biomedical Engineering has been a part of the Indianapolis landscape for decades. As a part of the Purdue expansion to Indianapolis, the Biomedical Engineering department in Indianapolis officially joins the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles to solve biological and medical problems to improve healthcare.

Students enrolled in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) can expect the same great education in West Lafayette and Indianapolis. The Weldon School curriculum incorporates engineering, design and analysis with additional coursework in organic chemistry, biochemistry, biomaterials, bioelectricity, biomechanics and biological heat and mass transfer. Students gain hands-on experience through intensive lab coursework, build design and solving real-life healthcare problems.

Maximizing Indianapolis’ unique strength in biomedical technology, the Weldon School has strong connections with the IU School of Medicine, Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children, IU Health University and Methodist Hospitals, and the VA Hospital - Indianapolis.

The Weldon School Indianapolis faculty members cover many areas of interest, including orthopaedic biomechanics, cardiovascular instrumentation, medical imaging, biomaterials, molecular engineering, biosensors, neurosciences and tissue engineering.

On both campuses, BME is known for being a close and connected community. Smaller class sizes with BME-specific courses allow students in each class to learn more about each other and what makes each student passionate about their studies and life goals.
