Professor Tong's presentation, "Understanding Fluid Dyanmics in the Brain Using MRI, will be from 4:00-5:00 p.m. EST on December 1st via Zoom: https://bit.ly/3mNID7v
Abstract: Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) plays an important role in the clearance of metabolic waste products from the brain, yet the driving forces of CSF flow are not fully understood. It is commonly believed that CSF flow is facilitated by the blood vessel wall movements (i.e., hemodynamic oscillations) in the brain. However, questions remain regarding 1) the explanation of coupling between hemodynamic oscillations and CSF flow; 2) the multiple mechanisms behind the coupling; 3) the validations using fMRI scans. In this talk, Dr. Tong will address these questions using recently developed scan protocols and models. In addition, he will also talk about assessing perivascular CSF dynamics using the animal model with contrast.
Bio: Dr. Tong received his BS in physics from Beijing University, China. He later received his PhD in biomedical engineering from Tufts University. Dr. Tong's group utilizes multiple imaging modalities to identify and understand the neuronal and physiological changes in homeostasis that correlate to various diseases. The main imaging modalities used in his lab are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), electroencephalogram (EEG). Through concurrent multimodal imaging studies on humans and animals, they try to deepen our understandings of the interactions between 1) neuronal and physiological oscillations; 2) brain function and perfusion; 3) central and peripheral spontaneous fluctuations.
This seminar is sponsored by the Center for Paralysis Research and Plexon.
