Les Geddes’ legacy continues with two named professorships

Through the Purdue College of Engineering’s Rising Star Program, Sarah Calve and Craig Goergen were named Leslie A. Geddes Assistant Professors of Biomedical Engineering for their exceptional accomplishments in research, teaching, and engagement. The limited-term professorships recognize two promising junior faculty members early in their careers while honoring a distinguished professor and brilliant researcher who left an unparalleled legacy.

Solorio receives ASPIRE Award for cancer research

The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research has awarded an ASPIRE Award to Luis Solorio, assistant professor at the Purdue Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, and his collaborator, Wilbert Zwart, group leader at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and Oncode Institute. The team is conducting innovative translational science in cancer research, specifically on development of a model that may enable prediction of the effectiveness of drug therapies for cancers that have metastasized.

Acid reflux could cause death during epileptic seizures, study finds

Pedro Irazoqui had just enjoyed a huge lobster dinner. Then he woke up that night finding he couldn't breathe. Terrified, Irazoqui sat up and tried to relax. Air suddenly returned to his lungs like nothing had happened. After grabbing his phone and Googling like crazy, Irazoqui, a professor at Purdue University, discovered that what he had experienced was acid reaching his larynx, causing it to contract and cut off air flow.

Senior Design teams present innovative, award-winning solutions to healthcare needs

Four senior design teams were recognized for outstanding achievement at the annual Purdue University Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Senior Design Projects Presentations and Demonstrations. On Dec. 13, 18 teams presented innovative engineering solutions to address various real patient, clinical, and healthcare needs to an audience that included the teams’ industry and clinical partners, the Purdue community, and the public.
