Les Geddes’ legacy continues with two named professorships

Through the Purdue College of Engineering’s Rising Star Program, Sarah Calve and Craig Goergen were named Leslie A. Geddes Assistant Professors of Biomedical Engineering for their exceptional accomplishments in research, teaching, and engagement. The limited-term professorships recognize two promising junior faculty members early in their careers while honoring a distinguished professor and brilliant researcher who left an unparalleled legacy.

Les Geddes, the Showalter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering, had a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of patients through the creation of advanced medical technologies. By the end of his prolific thirty-year career at Purdue, he had generated over twenty patents, thirteen books, and eight hundred scientific papers. His innovations ranged from burn treatments to miniature defibrillators and ligament repair to tiny blood pressure monitors for premature infants.

Calve studies the mechanical properties of soft biological materials, the extracellular matrix (ECM), 4D mapping of ECM during musculoskeletal development and regeneration, and biomechanical regulation of cellular behavior and tissue assembly. Learn more: https://www.sarahcalve.com
