Research Licensed To Help Spinal Cord Injuries And More

Each year, more than 11,000 Americans join the more than 250,000 people suffering a debilitating spinal cord injury. The loss of mobility and productivity in individual lives is devastating on many levels, and until recently little could be done for these people and fellow sufferers world wide.

Research by Professor Richard Borgens of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, and Director of the Center for Paralysis Research, is bringing hope to these patients. Human clinical trials launched in December 2002 with the Indiana University School of Medicine showed that experimental devices designed to encourage the regeneration of nerve fibers had positive results for all participants, though the degree of improvement varied.

The positive results were such that this breakthrough technology has been licensed to Andara Life Science, Inc. This cutting-edge effort is also having a positive effect on promoting the economic development necessary to bring this and other treatments to the public.
