Purdue REU Student Lisa Vaughn Selected for BMES 2004 Podium Presentation

Event Date: October 14, 2004
Recipient: Lisa Vaughn
Ceremony / Location: BMES Annual Meeting/Philadelphia, PA
Lisa Vaughn, a participant in this summer's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at Purdue, has been notified that she has been selected as one of sixteen podium presentations at the BMES 2004 annual meeting.

Lisa submitted a poster to the conference entitled "Microstructure Dependence of Cell Proliferation in a Three-Dimensional Collagen Matrix" based on the work she did this summer in Professor Sherry Voytik-Harbin's lab. Beverly Waisner of Basic Medical Sciences also participated in this research program.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University hosts 13 undergraduate students (having completed at least 4 undergraduate semesters) each summer for the National Science Foundation-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The students work on research projects of their choosing at Purdue University, and are also involved in site visits to local hospitals and industries. In addition, students participate in seminars and panel discussions focused on the ethical, clinical, industrial, and research aspects of Biomedical Engineering.

Students choose a research project directed by a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The studentĀ¹s goal is to complete enough summer research to be included (at least in part) in a published literature article and/or to be presented at an academic conference, such as BMES. All students write a written report and present their work at a mini-conference on the Purdue campus at the end of the summer.
