MSE graduate student, David E. Farache, has successfully completed his master's degree under the guidance of Professor Alejandro Strachan! David’s research focused on utilizing large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the transformation of martensitic material modeled after Ni63Al37, where he found that dislocations retain martensite well above the martensite start temperature and behave as nucleation sites for the martensite. Furthermore, competing martensite variants could develop stable domains as dislocation density is reduced sufficiently, resulting in an evolving microstructure.
