Jonathon Tucker - University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (Spring 2006)

Why did you chose to study in Australia?

I chose to study at UNSW because the exchange program allowed me take MSE-approved classes at Purdue's tuition rate.

What can you say about your experience?

Studying abroad at UNSW in Sydney was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Because of the unique relationship the Purdue MSE department has with UNSW, I had the opportunity to do undergraduate research at one of the most prestigious universities in Australia.

In my spare time, I learned to surf (left, at Maroubra Beach), took in the sights of Sydney, travelled to beautiful locations like the Great Barrier Reef and the Great Ocean Road, and made friends from all over the world.

What can you say about your home stay?

I lived in a two bedroom apartment with an Australian engineering student. My roommate was fairly studious and was very hospitable. My apartment was a five minute walk from Maroubra Beach, one of the most famous surfing beaches in Australia.

What was your most memorable cultural experience?

The most memorable cultural experience I had was attending a rugby match between the national teams of Australia and England at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney. Fans of both countries were cheering for their teams, and it was great to watch Australia win.

How did the classes compare to classes at Purdue? Did you like them?

I took two history classes and did a 6 credit hour MSE research project. The classes involved more big projects and less homework than I'm used to, but it's hard to compare because I was not taking courses similar to the ones I have taken at Purdue. I found my coursework both interesting and enjoyable. [At right, making friends with a kangaroo at a Wildlife Reserve].

How did this experience help you to grow, and how will this change your views on life in general for your future?

Everyone’s specific reasons for studying abroad are different, but broadening one’s experiences in both life and education is a general goal of anyone who studies abroad. I feel that attending UNSW expanded my understanding of the world and of myself; this is the reason I wanted to study abroad in the first place. I don't think of other cities and countries as just dots on a map anymore; I think of them as real places I might someday visit.

What would you say to other students about Study Abroad?

I would recommend this experience to anyone who can manage the fourteen hour plane flight! Australia has no language barrier and offers some of the finest universities in the world, as well as some of the most incredible people, places, and things to do you will find anywhere.
